A powerfully expressive voice, deep-rooted kantele and inventive percussion: fleet-fingered virtuoso and one-woman band Maija Kauhanen specializes in Finnish kantele and its old and rare playing techniques. Weaving together polyrhythms and organic beats she creates unique soundscapes and compelling grooves.
Maija Kauhanen is a composer and multi-instrumentalist as well as a charismatic performer with an entrancing stage presence. The rural music traditions of Finland and Karelia are her main inspiration and she deftly gives their time-honoured melodies a new life.
In 2017 Maija Kauhanen performed at WOMEX World Music Expo among the Official Showcase Selection and since then Maija Kauhanen has played more than in 30 countries in Asia, America and Europe. In 2019 Maija visited many major festivals such as Celtic Connections, FOCUS Wales and WOMAD in UK, Folk Alliance International in Canada, Il Festival de Músicas del Mundo in Colombia, Locarno Folk in Switzerland, Hudba Sveta Zilina in Slovakia, Urkult Folkfest in Sweden, Tønder Festival in Denmark and World Cultures Festival in Hong Kong.
Maija's first solo album Raivopyörä (The Whirl of Rage, Nordic Notes 2017) invokes powerful atmospheres. The songs deal with the fates of various women: challenging relationships, domestic violence and child-brides are unflinchingly portrayed, but there is also joy, consolation, hope and the mystery of young love to be celebrated. The album has received great reviews internationally.
Maija Kauhanen´s second solo album will be released in Spring 2022. Album is inspired by personal space.
Maija Kauhanen has won several significant prizes: In 2017 she won a Critics’ Spurs prize by the The Finnish Critics’ Association for “the best artistic breakthrough of the year”, “The newcomer of the year” prize in Finnish Ethno Awards and the prestigious Emma Award for best ethno album of the year.

SOOLO
Vahva laulu, sydäntä riipaisevat tarinat, rouhea Saarijärven kantele ja samanaikaisesti soitetut lyömäsoittimet! Polyrytmien sekä tekno-beatin kutomaan sykkeeseen yhdistettynä luovat ainutlaatuisen grooven ja soundimaailman vain yhden muusikon voimin. Kauhanen hakee musiikkiinsa vaikutteita vanhasta suomalaisesta ja karjalaisesta musiikkiperinteestä ja antaa sävelmille uuden elämän.
Kauhasen ensimmäinen sooloalbumi ´Raivopyörä´ liikkuu vahvoissa tunnelmissa ja tunkeutuu kuulijan ihon alle. Useassa kappaleessa teemana ovat eri-ikäisten naisten kohtalot. Tekstit kertovat parisuhteiden haasteista sekä kotiväkivallasta, mutta mukaan mahtuu myös paljon iloa, riemua, lohtua ja toivoa. Levyn visuaalisena teemana kulkee massiivinen ja runsashelmainen musta mekko. Mekko symboloi elämän eri kerroksia - se kohottaa, piilottaa, korostaa ja suojaa, muuttuu sekä vaihtaa muotoaan elämän ja liikkeen mukana. Erilaiset kangaskerrokset sekä pienet koristeet ovat tapahtumia ja muistoja elämän varrelta, kuin tähtiä yötaivaalla.
Levyn julkaisi maaliskuussa 2017 saksalainen levy-yhtiö Nordic Notes ja albumin on tuottanut palkittu tuottaja/muusikko Colin Bass Walesista, joka on tunnettu mm. legendaarisista yhtyeistä Camel ja 3 Mustaphas 3. Levyn on äänittänyt ja miksannut Joonas Saikkonen. Albumista julkaistiin CD ja LP -versiot Suomessa, Keski-Euroopassa sekä Iso-Britanniassa. Albumi on saanut ylistäviä arvioita kansainvälisesti.
Levyn tekoa ovat tukeneet Suomen Kulttuurirahasto sekä Samuel Huberin Taidesäätiö.

Full points for Maija Kauhanen. Have I nothing negative to say? No, not really. Maija
Kauhanen has made one of the year's best albums, dare I say even though there is still much
left of 2017.
Maija Kauhanen is rare versatile and everything she does is done at the top level. - - When
you see her live, one can not fail to be impressed by how superbly she mastered the entire
palette! The man wisely realized in the case of the disc is that it must be listened to as such.
The listener first hears only the music, and learn not to be impressed by everything actually
performed live by the same person. So it has clearly taken pains to make it all so nuanced as
possible on the disc.

As if all this was not enough to impress anyone convince Maija Kauhanen more than most as
a singer! There is everything from piercing harmonics tighten the bell-like soprano tones that
apply. Only four songs have lyrics, which means Kauhanen plenty of room to shine with
wordless vocals. It is certainly a wise move considering an international career, but most of all
it is extremely skilful and emotional! In Raivopyörä there are plenty of text, but the climax is
raised voice to pure cry, while Tine All offers playful, virtuosic decking spirit in full swing.

The disc's most peculiar number is Alttarille, where everything suddenly smells vanguard.
Kantele whimpers when played with a bow, and the instrument in this song is slightly out of
tune is a puzzling but brave effect. The texts reflect different women's stories and, like the
music, a blend of traditional and Kauhanen own. It sits just right - the content has a certain
historical but timeless character, while it is this day. Women subjected to violence and abuse,

She is a gifted virtuoso on the Kantele, this instrument is of course the focus of her debut
"Raivopyörä" and she proves once again what is to be achieved from this ancient instrument.
The producer Colin Bass (formerly Camel!) Was able to capture both the mysticism of Finnish
folklore, as well as its power and energy. The folk pop arrangements mentioned at the
beginning are often based on strong rhythm. The sound of various acoustic and electronic
instruments burgeons. "Raivopyörä" is the great debut of an extraordinary artist. Maija Kauhanen shows an
outstanding talent as a singer, as well as an instrumentalist and composer. The fact that she
